Road Centerline Edits

The following tools are available when editing road centerlines:

Description

Edit Existing Feature

Edits existing features (attributes and spatial data) by allowing users to select an object using the rectangle (default), lasso, or polygon options.

Delete Feature

Deletes features (must select a feature from Edit Existing Feature to enable the Delete option).

Create New Centerline Feature

Create New Feature (default) or Select and Range for existing road centerlines.

Flip Lines

Flip the direction a road centerline is digitized.

Undo Edit Feature

Undo the widget to reverse the last edit (up to 8 times)

Redo Edit Feature

Redo widget to go back to the last edit (up to 8 times)


Create New Road Centerlines

Use the Create New Feature tool to create new road centerlines.

  • Select the Create New Feature tool.


  • Tap on the map to create the starting point of the new road centerline.

  • Continue tapping to add additional vertices to the line.

  • Double-tap at the endpoint of the line to finish drawing the line.

  • The Copy Feature Confirmation window will appear. This tool is optional, but when used it allows the road centerline to inherit attributes from another layer.

    • To bypass this tool, uncheck the checkbox next to Copy attributes and select OK.

    • Administrators can add additional copy feature configurations if needed.

  • Copy Attributes: Check the box to apply attributes from another layer to the newly created road centerline.

  • Choose Layer: Select the layer to copy the attributes from.

    • Choose Tolerance: Select the tolerance used to search for features specified in the Choose Layer step.

    • Choose Feature: Select the feature to copy attributes from to apply to the newly created road centerline.

    • Use the Add and Delete buttons to manage the attributes added to the list.

    • Press OK to close the pop-up and apply the attributes to the newly created road centerline.

  • Navigate to the Feature Attributes section of the Edit tool.



  • Fill out the necessary fields, keeping in mind that some road centerline fields require both left and right values.

    • Administrators manage these fields. Some fields may not be editable or may have default values applied. Contact the administrator to modify these configurations via the Fields admin page.

    • Long/Lat: This field is auto populated by VEP.

    • External_nguid: This field is auto populated by VEP. This ID field is used to identify the feature and to join the feature to related tables.

    • Full Road Name: This field is auto populated by VEP by concatenating the street attributes into one field.

  • Press Save, at the bottom of the Edit tool, to apply the attribute edits.


  • To add values to the related table, tap on a related table at the bottom of the Edit Tool.



  • Fill out the necessary fields.

  • Press Save, at the bottom of the Edit tool, to apply the attribute edits.

  • Fill out the Street Name Alias table, if the road centerline has an alternate name, such as a route or other known name beside the official local name.

    • Tap on the Related Table: Street_Name_Alias.

    • Tap the blue Add Related Record button.



  • Tap on the Related Table: Street_Name_Alias again and fill out the necessary fields to add the alternate name.



  • Press Save, at the bottom of the Edit tool, to apply the attribute edits.

  • Once completed with all editing, submit the edit session.


Edit Existing Road Centerlines

Use the Select By tool to select a single or group of road centerlines to edit, flip, split, or merge.

  • Select the Select By tool.



  • Choose a Select Option from rectangle, lasso, or polygon. The default option is Select by Rectangle

    • If needed, select Clear Selection to clear the selected features.

  • Touch and drag to draw a polygon with the Select By tool that encompasses the area with the road centerlines to be selected.

  • Let go to complete the polygon. Selected road centerlines will be highlighted in red.



  • To modify the geometry of a road centerline:

    • Select a single road centerline. The selected road centerline is highlighted in red, with vertices marked as grey circles.



  • Touch and drag on the red part of the line to move the entire line to a new location.

  • To edit an individual vertex, touch and drag a grey circle to a new location. A dashed line will appear, showing the new shape the line will make after the vertex is placed.

    • See the Enable Snapping section to snap to nearby features.


  • To add a new vertex, touch a white circle and move it to its final location.

    • To delete an existing vertex, touch and hold down an existing vertex, then drag it to the Delete box.



  • To modify the attributes of the road centerlines when multiple features are selected, use the Choose feature to edit drop-down to specify the lines to modify.

  • Individual features can be selected, or multiple records can be selected to mass-edit the attributes, using the All Records option from the drop-down.



  • Make the necessary edits to the values in the fields in the Feature Attributes section.

  • Press Save, at the bottom of the Edit tool, to apply the attribute edits.


Flip a Road Centerline

Use the Flip Line tool to change the direction of a road centerline(s).

  • Select the Select By tool.



  • Choose a Select option from rectangle, lasso, or polygon.

    • If needed, select Clear Selection to clear the selected features.

  • Draw a polygon with the Select By tool to encompass the area with the road centerlines to be selected.

  • Let go or double tap to complete the polygon. Selected road centerlines will be highlighted in red.



  • Select the Flip Line icon.


  • The directionality of the selected road centerline(s) will be flipped to the opposite direction.



  • Adjust the attributes for the selected road centerline(s) to reflect the new directionality. The range fields and fields with left and right indicators may need to be adjusted.

  • Once completed with all editing, submit the edit session


Delete Road Centerline

Use the Delete tool to permanently delete a single road centerline or multiple road centerlines.

  • Select on the Select By tool.



  • Select an individual road centerline or a group of road centerlines with the Select By tool.

  • Selected road centerline(s) will be highlighted in red.

  • Touch the Delete tool.


  • A confirmation pop-up will display asking if you are sure you want to delete the feature(s).



  • Select OK to proceed with the deletion or Cancel to cancel the delete.

  • Once completed with all editing, submit the edit session.
