Open status means the observation is still under review and active.

Resolved status means the observation has been acknowledged and the needed information has been provided. It is no longer active. Resolved observations will not display on the map.

Canceled status can be used if the observation is no longer needing to be reviewed or was created by accident.

Admins have the additional option to permanently delete an observation from the data.
