Map Services Overview

Administrators can add various permanent, web map services for users to use as reference data.


1. Select Admin from the Navigation Menu

2. Click Map Services.

3. Click the small Plus icon by the desired map Service type to display existing services and view Map Service management options. The following hosted Hosted Services may be added to VEP:

  • Map Service
  • Geocode Service
  • Basemap Service

4. Click the large Plus icon at the bottom of the Map Service List to add a new service. The Add Map service window will open. 

  1. Use the Service Type dropdown to select the Map Service Type. The following Service Types are supported:
    • ArcGIS Server Web Service
    • WMS OGC Web Service
    • KML File
    • GeoRSS File
    • CSV File
  2. Add the Servcie URL.
  3.  Select a Display Order for the Map Service.
  4. Optionally, provide a Display Name to appear in VEP's Layer List.
  5. If credentials are required to access the Map Service, provide them in the Username and Password fields.
  6. Check if the service will be Enabled (available to users in the VEP map) and Default Visible. (Select to display the Map Service by default in the VEP map.)
  7. Configure the Permitted Roles roles that will be able to see the map service.
  8. Click Save to add the map service.

5. Under the Action Column, click the Pencil icon to edit an existing Map Service. Click the X icon to delete the service.

Geocode Services

ArcGIS World Geocoding Service is the default geo-locator service available to all users of the Web map. However, there may be cases where a system administrator may want to add a custom geocode service for address and name searches in their local jurisdiction. When a system administrator adds a custom geocode service, it will be available for all users of the local VEP instance.

Add a Geocode Service

To add a new ArcGIS geocode service, follow the steps above, expanding the Geocode Service option in step 3.

For step 4, configure the following settings:

  1. Service Type is defaulted to ArcGIS Geocode Services
  2. Add a Locator Service Name to be the display the name of the service. Use the following parameters as a guide:
    • Must have a minimum length of 4 characters
    • Must not contain special characters
  3. Enter the Service URL of the geocode service.
  4. If credentials are required to access the Map Service, provide them in the Username and Password fields
  5. Check Enabled to make the Geocode Service available to users in the VEP map.
  6. Click Save to add the Geocode Service.

Once a Geocode Service is added, users may access it by clicking the dropdown next to the Map Search Bar.
