Administrators can configure various VEP processes such as the Copy Feature tool, Domains, and Field properties from the Layers and Attributes menu.
Configure Copy Attributes
In the Configure Copy Attributes tab, Administrators can configure settings for the Copy Feature Confirmation window used during an Edit Session. This will allow the configured attribute fields to be auto-populated when a new feature is created.
1. Select Admin > Layer Configurations > Layers & Attributes in the Navigation Menu.
2. Use the small +/- icon to expand or minimize existing Feature Class configurations.
3. Click the larger + icon to add new Copy Field Mapping relationships. In the pop-up, fill out the following fields:
- Source Layer Type - Use the dropdown to pull data from a VEP layer or a hosted map service. For more information on hosted map services, check out our article
- Copy From - Layer/Attribute to pull the field value from.
- Copy To -Layer/Attribute to copy the field value to.
- Click the Add button to save these settings.
Example: To populate the PSAP_ID from the PSAP Polygon to brand new Address Point features, it would look like this:
Source Layer Type: PSAP Boundary is contained within VEP, so select VEP Layer.
Copy From – Layer: Specifies to copy an attribute from the PSAP Boundary layer.
Copy To – Layer: Specifies to copy the attribute to the Address Points layer.
Copy From – Attribute: Specifies that the PSAP_ID field to be copied from the PSAP Boundary Layer.
Copy To – Attribute: Specifies that the PSAP_ID attribute to be copied to the PSAP_ID field in the Address Points.
Did you know? Once you click Add you can start configuring the next Field Mapping relationship without closing the pop-up. Simply adjust the dropdowns and click Add again to quickly configure your settings.
4. Use the Pencil and X icons to edit or delete an existing Copy Feature configuration, respectively.

Feature Class Configuration
System Admins can configure which Feature Layers may be edited or uploaded by other users in the Feature Class Configuration tab.
1. Select Admin > Layer Configuration > Layers & Attributes in the Navigation Menu.
2. Click the Feature Class Configuration tab.
3. Check the boxes in the Map Edit or Upload columns to enable or disable user permissions to alter the Feature Layer.
4. Click Save to retain any changes made.
Download Configuration
The download configuration page allows users to select the field type needed for the unique ID (external_nguid) field in the downloaded validation results and full downloads. These field-type settings will only affect future validation downloads and native schema downloads.
1. Select Admin > Layer Configuration > Layers & Attributes in the Navigation Menu.
2. Click the Download Configuration tab.
3. Choose String or Integer as the field type for each layer's unique ID field.
4. Select Save to apply the changes.
Domains Overview
Add a New Domain | Add Coded Value to an Existing Domain | Pending Domain Edits
In the Domains page, administrators can modify existing domain values, create new domains, add new domain fields, and map them to Feature Class and Related tables fields.
1. Select Admin > Layer Configuration > Domains in the Navigation Menu.
2. Add New Domain allows users to create new Domains.
3. Use the Select Existing Domain dropdown to review an existing Domain.
4. The Coded Values display shows the following:
Code - The coded value of the domain
Description - The alias of the coded value
Status - If a change to the coded value is pending approval, this will be displayed here.
Actions - Click the X icon to remove the value. Domains are not fully deleted until the deletion is approved on the Pending Edits page.
5. Use the Navigation arrows to browse Domains when multiple pages of values exist. Manually enter a page number and press Enter to jump to that page.
6. Use the + icon to add a new coded value to an existing domain. New code values are not added to the Domain until approved in the Pending Edits tab.
7. Select the Pending Edits tab to view Domain adds, edits, and deletes awaiting approval.
Add a New Domain
1. Select Add New Domain.
2. Configure the following fields in the Add New Domain and Attributes popup:
- Domain
- Description
- Fields Type
- Domain Type
- Split Policy
- Merge Policy
3. Click Add New to create a Coded field value in the new Domain.
4. Click inside the following Coded Value fields to add values:
Code - The Coded value of the Domain code.
Description - The alias for the coded value.
Action - Select the X icon to remove the entry.
Repeat steps 3 and 4 as many times as needed.
5. Click Save to move the new Domain and Coded Values to the Pending Edits Tab.
Add Coded Value to an Existing Domain
1. Select a domain name from the Select Existing Domain drop-down.
2. Click the + icon at the bottom of the page.
3. In the Add Coded Value popup, fill out the Code and Description fields.
4. Select Save to add the Coded Value to the Pending Edits Tab.
Pending Domain Edits
1. Select the Pending Edits tab to review Domain and Coded Value adds, edits, and deletions.
2. Check the box with each of the changes you would like to save to the database or remove.
3. Click the Eye icon in the Action column to review the changes made for each entry.
4. Select Delete to remove the changes or Save to commit them to the database.
Caution: Adding a new domain or domain field, or editing an existing domain attribute will require a Map Service restart for the changes to reflect in VEP. Before restarting the Map Service ensure that all users are out of the system as restarts will interrupt other user's actions in VEP.
Fields Overview
The Fields page (formally Manage Tables) allows Administrators to configure a Source Type (i.e., Feature Class, Related Table) and the Source Name (i.e., Address Point, Road Centerline, Related Table, etc.) so that each field can have distinct requirements and values applied to them and allow for more efficient record creation and field standardization.
1. Select Admin > Layer Configuration > Fields form the Navigation Menu.
2. Use the following dropdowns to select which Feature Layer or Related Table to configure:
Source Type -
Source Name -
3. The following Attribute Details may be configured:
Show Alias – Replaces the short descriptor with the full Field Alias name in the Feature Attributes table.
Required – Sets the field as a required element when editing.
Editable – Sets the field as editable while editing.
Display – Determines whether the field is displayed in the Feature Attributes table while editing.
Domain – Allows mapping of an existing Domain to the field. Select the Domain to apply from the dropdown.
Default Value – Allows selection of a predefined domain value or creation of a custom expression as the default value for a field using one the following options:
- Select a value from an applied Domain.
- Enter a unique value if no Domain has been applied.
- Use the dropdown to select CURRENT_DATE for date fields where the current date should be the default value.
- Use the dropdown to select CONCATENATE_FIELD to configure a custom field value using field concatenation. See below.
Display Order – Determines the display order of the fields that are displayed in the Feature Attributes table.
These configuration settings will apply to any new features and their associated records created in VEP.
4. Click Save to retain the changes made.
Note: Editors should refresh their map after changes have been saved to see the changes applied to an open edit session. The 'external_nguid' field is not an editable field but the display order may be configured for user convenience.
Concatenate Field Tool
The Concatenate Field tool allows users to construct a custom default value by referencing other attributes already available in the data schema.
1. Select the CONCATENATE_FIELD option from the Default Value drop-down.
2. A Concatenate Field pop-up window will appear with both text and reference field options:
Text - Allows users to specify a text string as a standalone expression or in conjunction with an existing reference field.
Field - Allows users to select an existing reference field as a standalone expression or in conjunction with a user-specified text string.
Preview - Displays the combination of 'Text' and 'Field' values entered above and populated via the '+' button.
- Use to + button to the right of each field to populate the chosen field in the 'Preview' window.
- Use the Undo button to reverse any concatenation steps.
3. Select OK to commit the changes to the Fields page.
The concatenated field expression will be populated in the Default Value field.
Caution: Concatenated values are not saved to the data until the Save button is clicked in the Fields page.
